Description

The Virgin or The Virgins, Gustav Klimt

The Virgin (Die Jungfrau in German) is a oil on canvas of large dimensions, almost square: 190 cm high by 200 cm wide, painted in 1912-1913 by the painter Austrian Gustav Klimtis one of his last paintings. It is also known as The Young or The virgins. It is preserved in the art gallery of the National Museum in Prague.

It's a composition in a top-down view. Its circular format gives it great dynamism. There are several intertwined female bodies, some nude and others in Romanian-inspired dresses. In turn, these bodies are intertwined with decorative elements with which the bodies are intertwined: spirals, circles, flowers, ribbons. The faces of the girls are distinguishable: some asleep, others awake but drowsy. One of them stares out of the painting. The painting depicts various stages of the pre-adulthood stage of adult womanhood. Klimt uses sumptuous colours. The richness of the ornaments gives it an oriental air.

Normally Klimt's works created scandals and were criticized as "pornography" and evidence of being "excessively perverted". The works set Klimt up as a "pornographer".enfant terrible"for his anti-authoritarian and anti-populist views on art. He wrote: "If you can't please everyone with your works and your art, please please a few".
