Description

The Scream, Edvard Munch

Reproduction on canvas of the work "The cry". (in Norwegian Skrik).

This title is shared by four paintings from Norway Edvard Munch (1863-1944). All versions show an androgynous figure in the foreground, symbolizing a modern man in a moment of deep existential anguish and despair. The landscape in the background is Oslo seen from the hill of Ekeberg. The cry is considered one of the most important works of the artist and of the expressionist movement, constituting an image of cultural icon similar to that of the Gioconda from Leonardo da Vinci.

The painting is abundant in warm background colors, semi-dark light and the main figure is a person on a path with fences that is lost from view outside the scene. This figure is screaming, with an expression of despair. In the background, almost out of scene, two figures in hats can be seen, but are not clearly distinguishable. The sky appears fluid and swirling, as does the rest of the background.

The original from 1893 (91 x 73,5 cm) with a mixed technique of oil and pastel on cardboard, is on display at the Oslo National Gallery.
