Gassed

Magnificent reproduction of Gassedby John Singer Sargent. Currently in private collection.

Sargent completed this large painting (2.3 x 6 metres) in 1919, which depicts the consequences of chemical weapons in the First World War, more specifically the German attack that the painter witnessed at Le Bac-du-Sud in August 1918. A group of soldiers who have been attacked with mustard gas file through a field strewn with corpses. Some of the soldiers are blindfolded, and they hold formation by clutching the knapsack of the comrade walking in front. This scene is shown in contrast to a background shot where another group of soldiers who have not suffered the consequences of the gas are playing football, with a low moon so close to them that it looks like a member of the group.
