Leighton, Lord Frederic

Filter By

Leighton was an English painter and sculptor, born in 1830.

The work of Leighton focused on biblical, historical and classical subjects. He specialized in painting neoclassical themes.

In addition, Leighton sculpted several sculptures. His style was very close to the pre-Raphaelite movement. He was a pupil of Edward von Steinle and later, of the great Giovanni Costa.

In 1877, Leighton made a sculpture known as 'Athlete Wrestling with a Python', and was considered at the time to be the renaissance of contemporary British sculpture. It was thus taken as the origin and the greatest exponent of the New Sculpture movement.
