La Gioconda (Mona Lisa)

The Gioconda is a famous painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci, created between 1503-1519. It is an oil on panel and is currently housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris. La Gioconda is also known as the Mona Lisa and is considered one of the most famous and valuable works in the history of art.

This work has several elements that contribute to its fame. One of them is the mysterious smile of the model: Leonardo wanted to paint a smile that would disappear when looked at directly. To achieve this effect he plays with the shadows around the corners of the lips. The result is an expression that we perceive but at the same time seems to hide from our gaze, and is a fundamental part of its attractiveness and fascination.

Some say that the legend surrounding this painting was born with its theft, one of the most famous in history. In 1911 it was stolen from the Louvre Museum, until its recovery in 1913. During its absence, it became one of the most famous mysteries in the world.
