Description

Vase with twelve sunflowers, Vincent van Gogh 1888

Reproduction on canvas of one of the works of the series "Sunflowers" from Vincent van Gogh. This picture was painted in August 1888 (canvas 91 x 72 cm) and belongs to a series of paintings showing sunflowers at all stages of their life, from full bloom to withering. They were innovative in their day in their use of the full spectrum of yellow, which Van Gogh used in a chromatic range together with oranges, ochres, browns and beiges. The colour is applied with strong, aggressive brushstrokes, in small, dappled touches, emphasising the plasticity of the paint that creates a fine relief on the canvas to give volume to the sunflowers. To highlight the yellow and orange, he used green and sky blue in the contours, creating an effect of soft luminous intensity. For Van Gogh yellow had a special symbolism, it was the colour that represented his inner world.
