The colour is applied with strong, aggressive brushstrokes, in small, dappled touches, emphasising the plasticity of the paint that creates a fine relief on the canvas to give volume to the sunflowers. To highlight the yellow and orange, he used green and sky blue in the contours, creating an effect of soft luminous intensity. For Van Gogh yellow had a special symbolism, it was the colour that represented his inner world.
