The kiss is a work by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and probably the best known. It is an oil painting with gold and tin foil on canvas measuring 180 x 180 centimetres, painted between 1907-08.

This work, which follows the canons of Symbolism, is a canvas with mosaic decorations and a gilded background. gold leaf was inspired by a trip he had taken to Italy in 1903. When he visited Ravenna saw the Byzantine mosaics of the church of San Vital. For Klimt the flatness of the mosaics, their lack of perspective and depth only enhanced the brilliance of the gold, and he began to make unprecedented use of gold and silver leaf in his own work.

Normally Klimt's works created scandals and were criticized as "pornography" and evidence of being "excessively perverted". The works set Klimt up as a "pornographer".enfant terrible"for his anti-authoritarian and anti-populist views on art.
