Description

The pink robe, Sorolla

Painted in oil on canvas, it reflects an everyday scene inside a hut near the shore of the beach. An older woman helps a younger woman to take off her still-wet bathrobe. The silhouettes of the women silhouetted against the light, the folds of their clothes reminiscent of the "wet cloths" of Greek sculptures and the rounded bodies in pose combine to bring to mind the figures of the Three Graces, giving the work the dignity of a work of Classical Greece.

Sorolla painted several canvases with this same theme, but it is perhaps in this work from 1916, one of his masterpieces, where the artist reached his greatest maturity, fully establishing himself as the "painter of light". The scene is completely flooded by the luminosity that filters from the outside, through the reeds of the roof. The light filters through the canvases, reflects on the white robes and illuminates the shed and the women. Backlighting, reflected, direct, filtered, natural light: all the variants of light are captured by Sorolla on this canvas with rapid, accurate and fleeting brushstrokes that seem to want to retain the ephemeral luminosity of the moment.
