This work depicts a man with his right hand on his heart. The scene represents the ideal of the Christian Nobleman, captured in the solemn moment of pronouncing vows or taking an oath. The careful finesse of the features and the sober elegance of his clothes denote the noble origin of a nobleman who, nevertheless, has renounced ostentation and vanities in favour of higher ideals. The composition of the painting centred on the right eye directly confronts us with his gaze, making us witnesses to the rite by which the knight commits himself perpetually to a cause.
