Description

The painter's children in the Japanese salon

Magnificent reproduction of The painter's children in the Japanese salonby Mariano Fortuny. This painting belongs to the collection of the Prado Museum, although it is not currently on display.

Fortuny painted this picture in 1874, very close to the birth of japonisme. This beautiful painting shows the painter's daughters in a moment of family intimacy, with the girls distracted in their thoughts and a doll on the floor. The setting is a Japanese-style living room, which allows the painting to have a style halfway between Western painting and Oriental drawing. The painting was not finished, and some parts can be seen in great detail, such as the girl's knees, while others are barely sketched and do not allow to distinguish details such as the face of the girl herself. Even so, the light of the painting has a great quality, and the scene has a good balance of colors between the soft general tones contrasting with details such as the red of the cushion. The background seems to be rough and torn, as if it were wallpaper. However, the author describes it as a silk with embroidered branches and butterflies.
