The Temptation of San Antonio
Magnificent reproduction of The Temptation of San Antonioby Salvador Dalí painted in 1946. It can currently be found in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels (Belgium).
Surrealist reinterpretation of the classical mystical scene, where St. Anthony Abbot is confronted with visions of the earthly pleasures he is missing. These visions, which include naked women and a castle of gold, advance towards Saint Anthony on the backs of spider-legged elephants recurrent in the painter's works. The white-footed horse in the foreground symbolizes power or happiness, depending on interpretation. The composition is powerful: St. Anthony, naked and cornered (to emphasize his vulnerability), protects himself with the Cross against the colossal, towering temptations that dominate the vast desert landscape. Storm clouds hover over a desert that is otherwise gentle in brightness and colour.
