Description

Corral de Locos

Magnificent reproduction of Corral de Locosby Franciso de Goya painted in 1794. It has been in the Museum since 1967. It is currently in the Meadows Museum in Dallas.

The scene shows patients of a psychiatric hospital in the courtyard. Two of them fight naked, while the caretaker beats them with a riding crop. Others are dressed in a kind of sackcloth. A similar scene was contemplated by Goya, possibly in the Hospital de Nuestra Señora de Gracia in Zaragoza, who was impressed and told Bernardo de Iriarte about it in a letter. The composition of the painting is singular: the vertical axis of the painting coincides approximately with the corner of the corral, where the struggling patients are also located. The upper part shows a dazzling sky, in stark contrast to the darkness of the courtyard. The details are blurred by the brightness of the sky and the blackness of the walls, creating an undefined space of darkness that alludes to the condition of the mentally ill.

This painting is consistent with the painter's trajectory as a committed chronicler, who did not hesitate to denounce horrors and injustices through his works. A perfect example is his series of Disasters of the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814).
