Description

Snowy landscape with skaters and bird trap

Magnificent reproduction of Snowy landscape with skaters and bird trapby Pieter Brueghel the Younger. This work is a copy of the original painted in 1565 by the painter's father, Pieter Bruegel the Elder. It can now be found in the Museum of Art History in Vienna.

This painting is part of a Little Ice Age which lasted from about 1570 to 1610. The low temperatures caused a particularly unfavourable period, with very poor harvests leading to famine and suffering, and a considerable drop in life expectancy. The scene shows a broad landscape with a frozen lake within a village, possibly in the frozen channel of a river or lake. The inhabitants are having fun skating and playing. The figures are detailed, and the line is precise and meticulous. The narrative richness of the image would not be out of place in a contemporary comic.

Although the realism seems to suggest that the painting is a copy of a real scene, some experts believe that this work speaks to higher themes. The bird cage in the foreground and the skaters on the ice may be an allegory about the fragility of the human being and the traps the world sets for us, in line with the harsh living conditions of the time.
